Medea es el título de una tragedia de Eurípides. Se representó en el primer año de la Olimpiada 87, es decir 431 a.c. Formaba parte de una tetralogía junto con las tragedias Filoctetes y Dictis y el drama satírico Los recolectores. Ganó el certamen Euforión, el segundo fue Sófocles y el tercero Eurípides.
La tragedia trata la conocida historia de Jasón tras las aventuras que le llevaron a conquistar el vellocino de oro, trabajo impuesto por su tío Pelias. Jasón, tras el trabajo, se casó con Medea y tuvo un hijo en Yolco.
El padre de Jasón, Esón, había sido asesinado a manos de Pelias, para hacerse con el poder en Yolco. A la muerte de Pelias, Jasón ha de abandonar Yolco y huir con Medea y su hijo Mermero. En la muerte de Pelias estaba implicada Medea, quien engañó a las propias hijas de aquél para que le mataran. Por este motivo han de huir de Yolco y pasan por Corinto. Allí reina Creonte y es dónde transcurre la obra.
